Homemaking often seems like such an antiquated word. Whenever I hear anything about homemaking I often think of a 50’s or 60’s housewife. However, homemaking is actually just the management of the home. Think cleaning, cooking, laundry, and grocery shopping. Whether you are a stay-at-home mom or work out of the home full time, saving money and time on household chores is a plus.
1. Make Your Own
Why buy something if you can make your own for cheaper? With Pinterest, you can easily find how to DIY just about anything. You can find out how to can, how to freeze, and how to make your own cleaners. You don’t have to jump in and make everything yourself at once. Find something that will save you money and learn how to make your own. For me, I like to make all of my own cleaners. I have found that the few minutes that I spend making the cleaners are worth it for how well they clean. Not only am I saving money but time too because they clean better.
2. Use Technology
Homemaking is often thought of as old-fashioned but it doesn’t have to be. Use technology to help you be a frugal homemaker. Pinterest is my absolute favorite when it comes to finding quick and easy cleaning and housekeeping tips. I like to use my smartphone to do everything from clipping coupons to ordering groceries.
3. Create a Routine
Cleaning and cooking can be so overwhelming, especially if you are working outside of the home. Creating a routine can help save you time and money. If you have a good dinner routine down you always know what is going on and aren’t tempted to do carry-out or fast food for dinner. Making dinner at home each night can save you money. You can start just by planning your meals each week. Check out these simple tips for meal planning.
4. Buy Reusable
I know that buying something seems counterproductive to saving money, but buying something now can easily save you money in the future. By purchasing reusable products you can save yourself some money. Instead of buying cleaning wipes use microfiber cloths. Ditch disposable napkins and buy cloth napkins to use instead.
5. Less is More
If you are looking for some easy frugal homemaking tips one of the best is less is more. You don’t need to spend a bunch of money on expensive cleaning gadgets or kitchen tools. So many of those expensive gadgets only have one use and are rarely used. Skip buying the robot vacuums or as seen on tv cleaning tools.
You can also save yourself time by getting rid of things you don’t need. Decluttering your home will help save you time when cleaning.
6. Garden
Gardening is a great frugal homemaking tip to save money. If you can grow things instead of buying them it will save so much money. I admit that I tend to kill off all sorts of plants, so I try to keep my gardening to a minimum. I sometimes have some basil around. If I get crazy I will plant some carrots or lettuce. However, a couple of years ago we planted some fruit trees and they are so easy to take care of. I have an apple, plum, and peach tree.
Find something that your family likes to eat and that works for you and try growing it. You can easily get the whole family involved in gardening and save yourself some money. It’s one of my favorite frugal homemaking tips.
